Your estate will never be fully connected. Plan for that.
Estate data comes from meters, portals, invoices, spreadsheets and people. The question is not whether you can avoid all of that. It is whether, twelve months later, you can say where any given number came from.
However the data arrives, it arrives with its provenance.
Every carbon platform pitch shows an estate where every meter streams cleanly into one place. No portfolio of any size looks like that, and the ones that claim to are usually excluding the buildings that do not fit.
So files are not treated as a failure here. A spreadsheet that arrives through a validating importer, with the file kept, the import batch recorded and the uploader named, is more auditable than a live feed nobody has checked in a year. What matters is that every row carries how it got here.
The routes in
Connector sync.
Where a system exposes an interface, data is pulled on a schedule and every entry records the connector, the sync identifier, the host it came from and the moment it landed. That provenance appears in the lineage trace alongside the figure it produced.
Validating file import.
CSV and Excel, checked on the way in rather than after the fact. The source file is kept, the import batch is recorded, and the person who uploaded it is named against every row it created.
Public data APIs.
Published reference data, including the conversion factor sets, imported with their publisher revision date so a figure keeps the factors in force for its period.
Manual entry, done properly.
Some readings only exist because somebody walked to a meter. Manual entry is a supported route with the same provenance and the same review as any other, not an escape hatch that bypasses the controls.
Tenant and supplier submission.
Occupiers and suppliers submit against a building and a period, into a review queue. Nothing enters a reported figure because it arrived; it enters because somebody accepted it.
BMS and metering, during onboarding.
BACnet, Modbus, Niagara and similar building systems are connected as part of an onboarding engagement rather than by self-service. Estate BMS estates are individual, and pretending otherwise is how rollouts stall.
What connection actually buys you.
Not the absence of effort. The absence of ambiguity. When a figure is questioned, and one will be, the answer is on the record: this reading, from this source, imported on this date, priced with this factor set at this revision.
That is worth more at assurance than a diagram of pipes, and it is the reason provenance is recorded on every route in rather than only on the automated ones.
