Data lineage

When a number is questioned, you should not have to reconstruct it.

Start at the whole estate and walk down to the single entry behind any figure, then trace how that entry was calculated. Not a description of the calculation. The calculation, with the factor that priced it, where that factor was published, and what it deliberately left out.

The descent

Five steps from a portfolio total to one meter reading. Each step shows what share of the level above it accounts for, so you can see where a number came from rather than guessing which building moved.

What the trace carries

Five stages, recorded at the time the figure was produced rather than reconstructed when somebody asks.

01 · Source

Where the number arrived from, kept as evidence rather than as a note. A connector sync carries its own identifier, the moment it landed and the host it came from. A spreadsheet upload carries the file, the import batch and who uploaded it.

02 · Entry

The activity data exactly as recorded: the quantity, its unit, the building it belongs to and the dates it covers. Nothing is rounded on the way in, and nothing is aggregated before it is stored.

03 · Conversion

Every factor applied to that quantity, each shown as the arithmetic rather than as a result. The factor set is named, dated and linked to the publisher, and the publisher revision is recorded alongside the date we imported it, so a factor revised after your reporting period cannot silently rewrite it.

04 · Scope

Where each part of the result lands under the GHG Protocol, and what sits outside the scopes entirely. Biogenic carbon is calculated and reported, and held out of the gross figure, because including it would overstate the footprint.

NoteThe biogenic row is calculated, reported and held out of the gross figure. Rolling it in would add 47,989.66 kgCO2e to this one entry and overstate the footprint by almost half. A trace that shows you what it excluded is the only kind worth checking.

Why the factor version is on the page

Conversion factors are revised. If a figure is priced with whatever set happens to be current when somebody opens a report, last year’s number quietly changes and nobody is told. Every calculation here records the factor set, the publisher’s revision date and the date we imported it, so a figure reported in one period keeps the factors that were in force in that period.

A year with no published factor set fails rather than borrowing another year’s, and an interim set carries a label that travels with it into every trace and every citation.
